Christian Medical College Ludhiana (CMC) is one of
the oldest Christian Medical Colleges in the world still actively providing training for medical
personnel. From its humble beginnings over 100 years ago, CMC has grown into one of the top ten
colleges in India, training students of all faiths to be health professionals. The college seeks
to make a significant contribution to the health standards of all communities in India with
special emphasis on healthcare in the rural areas. Upon graduation, the Christian students are
often assigned to some 300 mission clinics and hospitals throughout the country.
CMC Ludhiana is recognized by the Medical Council of India and affiliated with Baba Farid
University of Health Sciences in Faridkot, Punjab. CMC Ludhiana has taken a unique approach to
teaching in India. The educational emphasis is on student-centered learning instead of rote
memorization. A modified problem-based approach is used, where active participation of students
is encouraged by presenting case studies (problems) for solution.
The CMC Medical Library houses over 13,000 books and subscribes to 185 national and international
journals. There are also several departmental libraries containing valuable material
supplementary to that available in the main library. Recent computerization of the library has
extended access to the most current medical information.
In 2006 all three colleges started accepting Non-Resident Indian (NRI) students. An NRI is a
person of Indian descent having residence in a country outside of India.
This admissions opportunity opened up due to a 7-Judge Bench judgment that was delivered on
August 12, 2005 by the Honorable Supreme Court of India. This has allowed CMC the ability to
expand their program of quality medical education to young people of Indian heritage from
around the world.
The Medical College has up to 7 MBBS seats available for NRI students. The Nursing College has
up to 9 BSc. seats and the Dental College up to 6 BDS seats.
Being a residential college, CMC provides students the maximum benefit of quality medical education
and Christian ethics and values.
