Ludhiana is a city of contrasts. It is a fast growing industrial center, surrounded by a fertile

Facts and Figures:
The city's origins can be traced back to the year 1481 when the Lodhi Dynasty
established a fort in the small village of Meer Hota. The name of the village
was later changed to Lodiana before becoming the present-day Ludhiana.

With around 2 million people, Ludhiana is the most populous city in Punjab.
- A majority of the people are of the Sikh faith
(over 60%), with the remainder mostly Hindus. Christians number a little over 1%.
- Much of the population consists of migrant laborers from
other poorer states of India who live in temporary housing. These settlements lack both
clean water & sanitation facilities.
Ludhiana is Punjab's most prominent industrial city, often referred to as the "Manchester

sewing machines.
